AUC names scholarship in honor of first lady

CAIRO: The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced that it is establishing a scholarship for public school students in honor of First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, an alumna of AUC.The scholarship, which was announced by AUC President David D.Arnold at the university’s annual Alumni Gala, is a tribute to Mrs. Mubarak’s accomplishments as a leader for Arab woman.

The Suzanne Mubarak Public School Scholarship Fund will be awarded to the most talented female students from Egypt’s public schools. “We could not think of a better way to honor Her Excellency Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak for her continuous efforts towards the development of Egypt and the region, and to thank her for her commitment to AUC,than by establishing this important scholarship in her distinguished name, said Arnold.

AUC allocates 21 percent of its operating budget, approximately $14 million annually, to provide scholarships and financial assistance to students.This includes funding for the Public School Scholarship Fund (PSSF). The PSSF grants full scholarship to 15 Egyptian public school students selected from the nation’s top 100 candidates.

This scholarship,which has benefited 159 students, is funded by AUC in cooperation with outside donors such as BP Egypt, Xerox Egypt and the Egyptian American Bank.
