Policemen shot dead a man who was allegedly carrying Molotov cocktails in Old Cairo on Monday, after an encounter that also left one of the policemen injured.

Two policemen in Al-Khayala Street, in southeast Cairo, became suspicious of a man who was attempting to discretely wear a niqab (face covering). Upon trying to inspect him, the suspect stabbed a policeman, before he was shot dead. The policeman and the attacker were transported to hospital, and upon his arrival the suspect died, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

The use of homemade explosives and small IEDs have become a common occurrence, as small explosions occur weekly in Cairo and across Egypt.
