Okasha acquitted of assault charges against employee

EMPC employee accused Okasha of attacking her after car accident

The Misdemeanour Court of 6 October acquitted Saturday former MP and TV host Tawfik Okasha of charges of assaulting an employee at the Egyptian Media Production Centre (EMPC).

Okasha was accused of beating employee Khadiga Hamdy who works as assistant communication manager for the Nile Radio Production company.

The prosecution previously referred the case to trial after Hamdy filed a complaint against Okasha, accusing him of striking and hitting her after their cars crashed in front of EMPC’s second entry gate.

Okasha, who is usually a source of public controversy due to his media discourse which is often found offensive, has caused debates inside the recently elected parliament.

Despite an extremely successful electoral campaign in which he won more than 70,000 votes – making him one of the most popular parliamentary candidates in the recent elections – Okasha has lost public and parliamentary confidence.

His membership was officially suspended earlier in March with at least two-thirds of the members voting for his dismissal.
