Car sales fall 31.7% YOY in January and February

Car sales dropped by 31.7% in January and February, in a year over year comparison. There were approximately 31,900 cars sold on the market, compared to 46,700 cars sold during the first two months of 2015.

The Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC) issued a report stating that the sale of passenger cars fell by 33% in January and February, recording a total sale of 21,100 cars compared to the 31,600 cars sold in the first two months of 2015.

The sale of buses fell by 21%, with 4,300 buses sold throughout the first two months. The sale of trucks also fell by 33%, with total reported sales of 6,400 trucks, compared to a total of 9,500 in the same period last year.

Sales of locally assembled cars fell by 29.7%, recording 15,300 units compared to the 32,800 units sold in January and February of 2015.

AMIC’s report indicated that Hyundai was the top-selling brand, acquiring approximately 25.9% of all sales in January and February. Nissan came in second with 14.8% of sales. Chevrolet placed third, recording a market share of 12.3%. Peugeot came in fourth with 6.3%, followed by Opel with 5.8%.

Kia came in seventh place, registering 4.5% of the total market sales, followed by Toyota with 4.2%. BMW secured 2.9% of the market’s total sales, while Renault, Skoda, and Daihatsu followed with 1.9%, 1.5%, and 0.7% respectively. The remaining 9.3% of the market was distributed among other brands.

AMIC’s report indicated that car sales fell by 31% in February, recording a total sale of 16,500 cars compared to the 23,900 cars sold in February 2015.

The report further revealed that the sale of passenger cars fell by 29% in February, recording a total sale of 11,400 cars compared to the 16,100 cars sold in the same month last year.

The sale of buses fell by 16.8%, with 2,200 buses sold in February, compared to 2,700 busses sold in the same month last year. The sale of trucks also fell by 45.4%, with total reported sales of 2,700 trucks, compared to a total of 5,060 in February 2015.

AMIC’s report indicated that Chevrolet was the top-selling brand, acquiring approximately 21.9% of all sales in February. Hyundai regained its second place with 17.2% of market sales, after Nissan seized the second spot during the previous month.

Nissan placed third recording a market share of 14%, while Toyota came in fourth with 5.6%, followed by Suzuki and Mitsubishi with 5% and 4.6% respectively.

Peugeot came in the seventh place, registering 4.2% of the total market sales. Opel advanced in February to the eighth place with 3.8%. Geely came in ninth with 3.1% of the market. King Long and Golden Dragon followed with close market shares of 2.2% and 1.9%. The remaining 13.4% of the market was distributed among other brands.
