El-Nadeem continues documenting violations despite closure

The centre released its latest report on Thursday which documents violations against detainees that took place in May

El-Nadeem Centre for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence published  a report on Thursday that documents violations carried out by the Interior Ministry against detainees in May 2016.

The report documented 212 cases of death that relate to actions by the state or security forces. The report included 11 reported cases of death in prisons, 43 cases of prevention of medical services inside prisons, 93 cases of enforced disappearance, and 83 cases of individuals who reappeared after disappearance. It also documented 27 cases of police brutality and 103 cases of torture and maltreatment in detention places

Compared to the April report, the number of enforced disappearance cases remained the same but cases of torture, maltreatment, and death inside prison increased. In April, El-Nadeem reported nine deaths inside prisons and 67 cases of torture and mistreatment inside prison.

May’s report also included the most recent cases of arrest and letters sent form detainees narrating their situation and the poor conditions inside custody.

El-Nadeem also reported on statements made by Interior Ministry officials that triggered controversy among activists and social media users, as the ministry denied such violations had occurred.

To compile the report, El Nadeem drew from testimonies made by family members and lawyers of those detained as well as media reports. The report added that despite clear documentation, officials continue to deny violations.

Despite ongoing threats and receiving a closure order in February, El Nadeem has continued to document state violations.

In March, the centre documented 202 deaths, 105 enforced disappearances, and 39 cases of medical negligence inside detention centres.

El Nadeem was founded in 1993, and has a license under the Doctors Syndicate and Health Ministry.
