President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi participates in UN week - presidency handout

Dozens of Egyptian expats assembled on Sunday to welcome the Egyptian delegation participating in the 71st debate of the United Nations (UN) general assembly in New York. The delegation was led by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Al-Sisi arrived in New York on Sunday to participate in the week-long annual debate, alongside country leaders and member state representatives from over 190 countries.

The gathering of supporters welcoming the delegation was organised by the Egypt for Egyptians expats association, and took place in front of the hotel where Al-Sisi is staying in Manhattan.

Nabil Megalla, founder of the association, published photos of the gathering, showing expats carrying Egyptian flags and posters of Al-Sisi.

During his visit, Al-Sisi is also expected to meet a number of his counterparts from the UK, France, and Palestine, among other officials.

This is the third time for Al-Sisi to participate in the debate since his appointment. During his participation last year, Egyptian expats gathered in front of the UN headquarters between supporters and opponents on the day of his speech. While many carried the Egyptian flag and posters of Al-Sisi, a nearly equal number of Muslim Brotherhood supporters assembled right in front of them, holding Raba’a signs and posters of Morsi.
