Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday it will continue its contacts with Cypriot Foreign Ministry to retrieve the Egyptian sailors who were seized by the Turkish naval forces.

On Friday, the Turkish naval forces seized a Cypriot fishing vessel carrying five Egyptian sailors near the coast of the Turkish Cypriot region of northern Cyprus.

The ministry said that it is contacting also the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus to retrieve the sailors.

The Egyptian embassy in Cyprus was informed four hours later by the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which it has immediately made several contacts with the relevant Cypriot officials.

Cyprus submitted a formal request for the mission of the UN Peacekeeping Forces against seize of the Cypriot fishing vessel and calling for help to immediately release the sailors.
