Press Syndicate mid-term election to be held on 1 March

Egypt’s Press Syndicate’s mid-term election is to be held on 1 March, said chairperson of the committee supervising the election, Gamal Abdel Rahim, in press statement on Monday.

Abdel Rahim announced the timetable of the electoral process for the mid-term elections, which is set is to vote for the post of head of the syndicate and six board members.

The committee will start receiving candidate nomination as of 10 February to February 14 in the afternoon. Later, on 15 February, the committee will start receiving appeals on nominations and withdraw members’ requests until 19 February, which will also mark the date of declaring final candidacies.

During election day, the voting will begin after the quorum of the general assembly is reached by the presence of half the members.

A second round would take place on 2 March for the president’s seat, if no candidate has an absolute majority of votes (more than half) in the first round.

The current head of the syndicate, Abdel Mohsen Salama, said that he did not yet determine his stance toward running the election, but his position will be announced one day before the beginning of the nomination.

Meanwhile, the Head of the State Information Service (SIS), Diaa Rashwan, announced his intention to run for the seat of the Head of the Press Syndicate.
