Egypt’s Ministry of Education signed a cooperation protocol with Orange Egypt, on Tuesday, to provide the hosting services and cloud infrastructure needed to operate and manage a digital e-classes platform.

The protocol for the platform, launched by the ministry, will run for a period of three years, and was signed in the presence of Minister of Education Tarek Shawky and Yasser Shaker, CEO and Managing Director of Orange Egypt.

The agreement will see the Ministry of Education develop an educational platform for students to display educational content produced by the ministry. It will also determine the technical needs related to hosting and the infrastructure necessary to launch the platform.

At the same time, the platform will provide the digital content in line with the ministry’s vision and strategy in this regard. Orange Egypt, in coordination with the ministry, will provide the platform with the modern technologies to host content through its data hosting centres.

The technology company will also provide the cloud infrastructure necessary to operate and manage the platform. Fees for the platform can be paid via smartphone, using Orange cash.

Shawky said that this step comes as part of the ministry’s interest in providing alternatives to traditional forms of education, which were started this year due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The ministry has launched more than one digital library and a platform to broadcast educational classes, and has introduced a platform to broadcast final reviews in various subjects for high school students.

Shawky added that all these measures come under an integrated strategy to develop Egypt’s educational system, that will see a significant shift towards digital learning methods. This also forms a part of the Egyptan state’s digital transformation efforts, implementing the state’s comprehensive plan to deal with any potential repercussions of the coronavirus.

The signing of the protocol was attended by various officials, including Deputy Minister for Education and Technical Education Ahmed Daher, and Adviser to the Minister for Financial and Administrative Affairs Major General Akram Al-Nashar, among others.
