Egypt and the UK’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) signed, on Tuesday, a protocol of cooperation which will help in developing health care in Egypt.

Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, signed the protocol with RCPSG President Jackie Taylor.

Abdel Ghaffar indicated that the RCPSG is one of the most prestigious international bodies in granting fellowship certificates in the medical field, adding that this protocol allows Egypt to establish an RCPSG headquarters in Cairo.

The headquarters will help in training and rehabilitating doctors in the field of medicine and surgery. The minister noted the importance of enhancing the research and development capacity through cooperation with high-level international scientific institutions.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the RCPSG have been working together since February, in order to promote the highest possible standards for surgical, medical, and dental care in Egypt, he said.

Taylor expressed her college’s happiness to sign the protocol with Egypt, and noted the UK’s keenness to push and encourage bilateral cooperation with Egypt during the next stage.

The protocol states that the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons will provide education and professional assessment services to support college fellowships which will achieve the highest possible standards of healthcare.

Areas of cooperation between the two sides include developing an educational programme to support applicants for the FRCS (Ophthalmology) examinations. This is in addition to providing trainings and assessment for postgraduate students who have obtained their certificates from the RCPSG.
