5.85% decrease in Egypt’s manufacturing, extractives index in May 2021

Egypt saw a 5.85% decrease in its manufacturing and extractive index in May 2021, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The data was reported in a press release on Sunday about the primary data of manufacturing and extractive industries of production index of May 2021.
The agency has updated the index methodology using 2012/13 as a base year and the level of main indices of industrial activity according to Industrial Activity Manual (ISIC Rev.4) and the monthly index for producer prices based on 2012/2013.
The manufacturing and extractive industries index, excluding crude oil and petroleum products, reached 102.72 (primary data) during May 2021, compared to 109.10 during April 2021 (final), reflecting a decrease of 5.85%.
The manufacture of beverages reached 325.56 during May 2021, up from 257.40 in April 2021, with an increase of 26.48%, due to increasing demand for beverages during summer and the holy month of Ramadan.
The manufacture of electrical equipment reached 118.77 during May 2021, compared to 106.04 in April 2021, an increase of 12.01%.
Meanwhile, the manufacture of paper and paper products reached 59.79 during May 2021, down from 71.32 in April 2021, a decrease of 16.17% due to the market conditions.
Machinery and equipment manufacture reached 155.25 during May 2021, compared to 166.70 in April 2021, a decrease of 6.87% due to the decrease in exports.
