An attack on Syria is a threat to Arab and Islamic peace as well as being disrespectful to the international community, Al-Azhar said in a statement on Sunday.
The Islamic institution stated that an attack on Syria would threaten international peace and security. It added that the decision of United States President Barack Obama to carry out a military stike on Syria would be “a breach of all international norms”.
“Al-Azhar reaffirms its condemnation of the use of chemical weapons regardless of who uses it,” the statement read. The institution added that the Syrian people have the right to self determination; they should be transparently allowed to choose their rulers.
Obama made a statement about Syria on Saturday when he described the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime as “an assault on human dignity”. Obama said the attack is a serious danger to the US national security as well as the security of the US “friends and partners” sharing borders with Syria.
“I have decided that the United States should take military action against Syrian regime targets,” Obama said. He added that the intervention would neither be open-ended nor a ground intervention.
