CAIRO: A new department for the study of poultry diseases has been set up by the National Research Centre in a move aimed at bolstering nationwide efforts to combat to the spread of the bird flu virus. The department is aimed at developing and protecting a LE 6 billion industry that affords three million jobs to Egyptians. Dr Mohamed Utaat, specialist in poultry diseases at the centre, said that the department will undertake comprehensive periodical surveys, using modern technology to pinpoint the causes of the diseases and their developments. A veterinary clinic for poultry that will be run by the veterinary research section is scheduled to be set up to provide services to poultry farm owners including diagnosis, treatments and laying down programs for vaccination. The new department will also offer consultancy to the biggest poultry-producing companies and organize training courses that should offer guidance on how to deal with related diseases.
