Former head of parliament’s Human Rights Committee backs off

MP Anwar Sadat said he will not run for the position in the parliament’s second term, following tensions during the first year

Member of parliament Mohamed Anwar Sadat revealed he will not run for the position of head of the Human Rights Committee during the House of Representative’s second legislative year.

Sadat, who formerly led the committee before resigning on 30 August, said in a Sunday statement that during the first year the committee’s work was restricted. He added that memberships in the committee are now manipulated by the security apparatus.

“There is a goal to make this committee work according to the orders of others,” the statement read, as the MP previously insinuated in local media outlets that he was being pressured to leave his post.

This comes as the parliament will soon elect new heads for its internal committees. Sadat and parliamentary speaker Ali Abdul Aal have previously had tense conversations inside the parliament.

One week before his resignation, Sadat was referred to the disciplinary committee along with 11 other MPs from the same committee for travelling to Geneva to attend an international rights conference, supposedly without prior authorisation from Abdul Aal.
